New Renderings

Hi all, check out the new concept drawings of my chest of drawers design.  Let me know what you think.  You can find them at the top of my Renderings Page.

2:01 [an investigation into user-generated design]

This experiment was born out of my growing interest into the genre of User Generated Design.  I invited a group of participants to generate designs of furniture objects that would benefit them in some way in their day to day lives.  None of the people that produced drawings for 2:01 are furniture designers.  My involvement was to interpret the drawings, and to realize the user’s vision by making a full-scale, functioning piece of furniture.  My interest with this experiment was to see how creative people could get, and also the dynamic that was created by taking myself out of the picture during the concept phase of the work that is displayed here.

The name 2:01 was created from the constraints that I laid out for this project.  I challenged the group to draw their design in one minute, and I strived to create the objects in two hours.  For the most part, these constraints were upheld.  I saw these constraints as elements that would inject an energy into the project that I postulated would increase creativity of the user and myself.  Indeed, by viewing the breathe of work together, one can gather a sense of haste coupled with sense of experimentation.  Additionally, I constrained my side of the project by only using materials that were left over in my studio from previous work I have completed.

The pieces have all been lightly sanded and left unfinished to give the user further control in the final outcome of their design.  This treatment also leaves some of my marks made during production that the user can leave or hide depending on their aesthetic sensibility.  The object’s are now officially the property of the designers.  I expect them to enjoy their creation and to keep me informed of how they exist with the work moving forward.
